The Washington County Retired Teachers will have the Duncansville One Room School House open for tours.

This building was moved in 2000 from its location in Washington County to its present location on Stanley Street across from the E.B. Stanley Middle School. This building was built in 1889 on land owned by Henry and Amanda Duncan, given by them to be used as a school. It was discontinued in 1954 when many of the one and two room schools in the county were consolidated with larger schools. Ray Duncan, who owned the building, deeded the building to the Washington County in 1999, and the School Board now owns and maintains the building. It has been furnished with desks of the period and other memorabilia. For more information, call (276) 628-3896.

Experience a day in the 1860s!

The Abingdon Muster Grounds will host the 6th annual Abingdon Civil War Weekend, an event for the whole family! Camps will be open Saturday, July 29, 2017 from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and Sunday, July 30, 2017 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Battles occur at 2:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday and will feature infantry, cavalry, and cannons. A Civil War film (tbd) will be shown on a large outdoor screen on Saturday night at 8:30 pm. Admission is free!

Visitors may walk in the footsteps of the Overmountain Men on a segment of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail! Admission is free!

Join local travel writer and author Joe Tennis on Monday, July 31, 7pm-8pm, for an illustrated lecture on the origin of place names across the region. Mr. Tennis and shares hilarious stories of our communities. Mr. Tennis is also signing copies of his books including the second edition of his popular Southwest Virginia Crossroads and recent Haunted Highlands: Ghosts & Legends of North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Join history buff Rick Morgan on Tuesday, August 1, 7pm to 8pm for an insightful lecture and slide show highlighting the career of Abingdon’s most famous photographer, George Wertz. From 1872 until 1924, Wertz took thousands of photographs of Abingdon’s citizens and those from the surrounding communities. When biplanes came to Abingdon, in 1915, he even recorded Abingdon from the air.

Admission is free.
