Coal Country examines the rich history and culture of coal in Southwest Virginia through the stories of the coal companies, the mines and towns they built, and the people who called those towns home. Generations of miners tunneled their way into the mountainsides of the region, digging ever deeper in search of those rich seams of shining black running through the rock. Wherever those deposits were found, communities sprang up around them, built by the companies that owned the mines. These company towns, or coal camps, were entirely self-sufficient, complete with company houses, company stores, hospitals, churches, dance halls, even marching bands and baseball teams.

Betsy K. White • Cultural Heritage Gallery: The decorative arts legacy of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee developed against the backdrop of European settlement of Virginia’s frontier – really America’s frontier. Prior to the middle of the 18th century, the Blue Ridge Mountains formed a steep barrier to settlement of Virginia’s great valley that lay just beyond it. It wasn’t until the end of that century that it reached all the way to what is today Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
