The Historical Society of Washington County Virginia presents a Living History Tour of the Sinking Spring Cemetery in downtown Abingdon. Visitors will join Historical Society members for a walk through this picturesque burying ground to meet residents of the area’s past—Brig. Gen. John B. Floyd, Lt. Col. W.W. Blackford, Civil War-era Richmond newspaper editor Robert Hughes, Brig. General John Hunt Morgan, and over 30 Confederate soldiers interred in the ""Unknown Confederate Dead"" section of the cemetery. Visitors will also see the African American Cemetery, final resting place of Landon Boyd, one of the jurors selected for the trial of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis, the trial of the century that didn't happen.

Why has the U.S. government and military had a strategic interest in the Saltville valley for more than 150 years? Enjoy an interactive presentation by Harry R. Haynes, native of southwest Virginia and retired manager of the Museum of the Middle Appalachians, on Tuesday, July 31, 7:30-8:30PM in the Auditorium at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. Haynes explains the importance of the 150-year-old Saltville saltwells using photographs from the Museum of the Middle Appalachians’ collection as well as personal photos not previously seen by the general public. A brief description of the present-day salt company and natural gas storage facility will also be included.

Admission is free.
