2017 Writers’ Day

The Washington County Retired Teachers will have the Duncansville One Room School House open for tours.

This building was moved in 2000 from its location in Washington County to its present location on Stanley Street across from the E.B. Stanley Middle School. This building was built in 1889 on land owned by Henry and Amanda Duncan, given by them to be used as a school. It was discontinued in 1954 when many of the one and two room schools in the county were consolidated with larger schools. Ray Duncan, who owned the building, deeded the building to the Washington County in 1999, and the School Board now owns and maintains the building. It has been furnished with desks of the period and other memorabilia. For more information, call (276) 628-3896.

The Writers’ Day events will feature a grand finale showcase of readings by participants John Hardy, Jim Minick, Thorpe Moeckel, and Mark Powell. The authors will be accompanied by regional celebrities and award-winning guitar duo Wyatt Rice and Claiborne Woodall.

Rice and Woodall frequently play as a guitar duo together throughout the region. Wyatt Rice is a member of the Tony Rice Unit and a master of the new acoustic style of flat-picked guitar. He has frequently performed on the Grand Ole Opry and with numerous artists including Alison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs, and the Lonesome River Band. Claiborne Woodall has placed highly in several guitar competitions and performed with numerous acoustic groups throughout the region. He has performed at the Smithsonian Institution, NPR radio, Floydfest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots, and acoustic venues throughout the East.

Admission is $10 at the door or free for Writers’ Day participants.

Creeper Trail Ride with the Legend

Ride with the Legend gives bikers a chance to experience the beauty of the Virginia Creeper Trail, guided by ‘The Legend’ Lawrence Dye, an 85-year-old Trail Ambassador who has logged more than 192,000 miles of biking on the region’s finest rails-to-trails landmark.

Sponsored by the Virginia Creeper Trail Club, the ride will begin at the Abingdon Trailhead at 8 am on July 29 and proceed through Damascus to Whitetop Station and back. The pace will be moderate with plenty of breaks, and mileage can be shortened by joining or leaving the group at different locations along the trail. Participants should bring their own bikes (or rent one in Abingdon or Damascus) as well as weather-appropriate clothing, water, food and a tire-repair kit.

The Great Channels is a unique geologic formation composed of a network of deep sandstone crevices at the top of Clinch Mountain. It is part of the Channels State Forest and Natural Area Preserve. On the hike, participants will learn about the geology and ecology of the area. Participants should be prepared for a moderately strenuous six-mile round-trip hike. Hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots and bring lunch, plenty of water, and possibly rain gear.

Participants will meet at Hayters Gap Community Center, 7720 Hayters Gap Road Saltville, VA 24370.

Experience a day in the 1860s!

The Abingdon Muster Grounds will host the 6th annual Abingdon Civil War Weekend, an event for the whole family! Camps will be open Saturday, July 29, 2017 from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and Sunday, July 30, 2017 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Battles occur at 2:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday and will feature infantry, cavalry, and cannons. A Civil War film (tbd) will be shown on a large outdoor screen on Saturday night at 8:30 pm. Admission is free!
