Saltville has been important from the Ice Age through the Civil War to the present. The Museum of the Middle Appalachians has exhibits of wooly mammoth and mastodon fossils which have been discovered in Saltville, of the history of salt extraction, and of Saltville’s importance during the Civil War. Harry Haynes, the manager of the museum, will lead a tour which will provide a larger context to understand the Well Fields (the site of a walk at 2 p.m.).
