A hands-on stream pollution workshop at White’s Mill is part of this year’s Virginia Highlands Festival.

Participants will discover how to catch and identify macroinvertebrates—tiny creatures such as the stonefly, mayfly, water penny, and many others—living in stream beds. These macroinvertebrates are pollution sensitive and the types and the numbers found are indicators of stream health. Cathy Landy, a certified trainer for this type of monitoring which is called Save Our Streams, will lead the workshop. Landy is a contractor for Upper Tennessee River Roundtable and the host for the workshop.

The workshop will also feature a pollution-prevention game for kids and a session for educators to learn techniques for teaching about watersheds and pollution prevention. April Grace, educator with the Roundtable, will lead the activity. Admission is free.
