The Historical Society of Washington County Virginia presents a Living History Tour of the Sinking Spring Cemetery in downtown Abingdon. Visitors will join Historical Society members for a walk through this picturesque burying ground to meet residents of the area’s past—Brig. Gen. John B. Floyd, Lt. Col. W.W. Blackford, Civil War-era Richmond newspaper editor Robert Hughes, Brig. General John Hunt Morgan, and over 30 Confederate soldiers interred in the “Unknown Confederate Dead” section of the cemetery. Visitors will also see the African American Cemetery, final resting place of Landon Boyd, one of the jurors selected for the trial of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis, the trial of the century that didn’t happen.
Admission is $5 and payable only at the event. Tours last approximately an hour with the first one at 5PM and the last one at 7:15PM. Appropriate for families, but small children may become tired or bored. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
