Sunday, August 5th, 2018 – 2:00 to 4:00pm
Rebecca Rader, president of the New River Valley Mushroom Club, will lead a walk for 25 participants in Mt. Rogers NRA. We will walk to collect a few specimens for identification and talk about features of mushrooms that we can observe in the field. We should see many common mushrooms fruiting at the height of the season in our area. We will talk about the basics of mushroom identification and look at some of the best field guides and resources for learning about mushrooms in the Central Appalachians.
Rebecca Rader joined the North American Mycological Association in 2004 and founded the New River Valley Mushroom Club to serve the western half of the state of Virginia in 2008, and she has remained president of the organization. She served as Executive Secretary of NAMA from 2012-2014 and in 2016 the NRVMC cohosted NAMA’s Annual Foray with the Mycological Association of Washington, DC, the first time the event was held in Virginia.
The group will meet at Straight Branch parking lot in Mt. Rogers NRA (four miles from Damascus on Rt. 58E).
