Hike to Cleveland Barrens
July 28 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Saturday, July 28, 2018 – 9:00am to 4:00pm
Hike a moderately-strenuous 4-mile round-trip trail in the Cleveland Barrens Natural Area Preserve along the Clinch River in Russell County. The property is owned by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Within species-rich limestone forests and woodlands is a globally-rare natural community called limestone-dolomite barrens. These “barrens” are remnants of native prairies which once extended from the mid-west into Virginia. Found on steep southwest-facing slopes, these “barrens” support numerous rare plants and animals.
The group will meet in the Food Country parking lot on Highway 19 north at 9am and carpool to the preserve. Claiborne Woodall, with the Virginia Natural Heritage Program, will lead this 4-mile roundtrip hike. Participants must bring lunch, drinking water, and sturdy hiking boots. You may also want to bring a camera, rain gear, field guides, and binoculars.
Reservations required. Call 276-676-5673 (leaving name, phone number and number of participants) by Thursday, July 26 at 5pm. Limit 20 participants. For more information visit http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/natural-area-preserves/cleveland
