The Abingdon Muster Grounds hosts the 7th annual Abingdon Civil War Weekend, July 28 and 29, for a fun-filled family event.
Both Union and Confederate troops used the Abingdon Muster Grounds property during the Civil War. Walk the property where Lieutenant Samuel Vance Fulkerson mustered some of the 37th Virginia Infantry. See the 1813 home “Retirement” which was occupied by invading Union troops in 1864. Visit encampments of rank and file, see firing demonstrations, learn from interpreters, historians, scholars, shop with period sutlers, and much more.
Camps are open Saturday 9AM–6PM and Sunday 10AM–3PM. Battles occur at 2PM both days and feature infantry, cavalry, and cannons. A Civil War film, “Wicked Spring”, will be shown on a large outdoor screen Saturday at 8:30PM. Admission to the event, including the movie, is free!
General parking is available on the grassy lot at the corner of Colonial Road and Holston Street. Handicapped parking is available at the Keller Interpretive Center. Free festival buses and trolleys stop at the Abingdon Muster Grounds.
